Here we provide answers to Frequently Asked Questions, including information on cremation urn sizes. One of the most FAQs is about the size required of an urn or a keepsake.

Cremation Urns FAQ:

Q: How do I know what size of urn to buy?

A: The size requirement of a standard cremation urn is 200 cubic inches of interior volume, according to CANA, the Cremation Association of North America. This is the minimum size of all our full size urns, with an additional 12 cubic inches in the upper sphere top of our glass urns, for containing mementos separately from the ashes.  A 200 cubic inch cremation urn will contain the cremated remains of a person with a healthy weight of up to 200 pounds. Generally speaking, one pound of body weight becomes about one cubic inch volume of ashes.

Q: What if I need an urn that is larger than 200 cubic inches?

Our series of Brass Cremation Urns hold over 200 cubic inches, up to 300 cubic inches in volume.

Q: Will I need to consider the height and width of the urn?

A: If you plan to place the urn within a glass-front or a stone-front columbarium niche, you should ask your Funeral Director or Cemeterian about the interior dimensions of the selected niche.

Q: What is the value of an artist-signed urn?

A: A general rule of thumb for the retail value of high-caliber artist-signed blown glass vessels is about $100 for each inch in height.  Cremation Urns by Legacy’s urns and mini-urns are priced online on par with or below retail, as we endeavor to make beautiful urns as universally affordable as we can. The work of our highly acclaimed artists is very likely to increase in value over time.

Q: How do people use a keepsake urn?

A: The ways in which families choose to memorialize their loved one are many and varied. Some find that a perfect funeral service with a beautiful urn as a resting place provide them with comfort and closure. Others opt to scatter the ashes in a location that holds special memories. When scattering has been chosen, it can be comforting to keep a small portion of the ashes sealed within a mini urn to be kept within the home, or in a piece of cremation jewelry to be worn next to your heart. Some families who live at great distances from one another choose to divide the ashes among a full size urn for the surviving spouse, and several matching keepsake mini urns for each of the children. Others select our solid glass hearts as keepsake mementos, which match the urn. Because these heart keepsakes do not contain any cremation ashes, they can be particularly appropriate mementos for grandchildren, and may be engraved on the back.
